Harbor Freight – Your Tool Set Awaits

The camping trip plan sounds good to me overall, but I do have a few suggestions about the trailhead and timing. Pine Ridge is a solid choice because it has reliable water access and the campsites are well sheltered from the wind. We could set up a base camp there and then do day hikes to the summit ridge if the group is up for it. You will want to bring your own tent and sleeping bag, but we can share cooking gear to lighten the load. Let me know if you prefer to carpool Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. The weather looks decent but temperatures drop quickly once the sun goes down, so pack extra layers. I will bring the stove and fuel, and we should coordinate who brings what food so we do not end up with duplicates. I also need to check whether a permit is required for that area because some national forest land does require one for overnight stays. I will look into it this evening and send you what I find. Let me know if you have any other questions about gear or the route.

The raised garden beds you asked about are actually quite simple to build yourself with basic materials from any home improvement store. Cedar planks work best because they resist moisture naturally and do not need any chemical treatment to hold up against weather. The most important thing is to keep the width under four feet so you can reach the center from either side without stepping into the soil. Depth really depends on what you plan to grow. For carrots or potatoes you want at least twelve inches of soil, but for lettuce, herbs, and most flowers eight inches is plenty. I built two beds last spring using untreated cedar and they have weathered really well through rain and heat. You will also need corner brackets and landscape fabric to line the bottom so weeds do not push up from below. Assembly takes about an afternoon with basic tools and the total cost is very reasonable compared to buying pre-made kits. If you want I can send you the exact cutting list and step by step instructions I followed. Just let me know and I will forward everything over.
