I've been spending a lot of time in the garden lately trying to get my tomato plants to thrive. I started them from seed back in March and they've been growing really well in the greenhouse. I transplanted them into raised beds last week and added some compost I made from kitchen scraps. The basil I planted next to them is also doing great and the whole garden smells amazing when I water it in the evening. I'm hoping to have enough tomatoes to make sauce this year. Last year I only got about ten pounds total but I've doubled the number of plants this time. I also added some marigolds around the edges to help with pests. So far so good. I'll need to set up a better watering system though because carrying buckets is getting old. I'm thinking of getting a soaker hose setup this weekend. A friend also recommended using straw mulch to keep the soil moist and prevent weeds, so I might try that as well. The weather has been cooperating nicely with warm days and occasional rain.

I started working on a bookshelf project last weekend and it's been more challenging than I expected. I'm building it out of oak that I picked up from a local lumber yard. The joinery is what's taking the most time because I'm trying to use traditional mortise and tenon joints instead of just screwing everything together. I had to sharpen my chisels several times to get clean cuts. The most frustrating part was cutting the tenons to the right thickness — I oversanded one and had to glue in a shim to fix it. But overall it's coming together nicely. I still need to add the shelves and then figure out how to finish it. I'm thinking of using a tung oil finish because it brings out the grain nicely without being too glossy. I'll probably spend another weekend on it before it's done. A neighbor saw me working in the garage and asked if I could build a similar one for them. I said maybe after I finish this one so I can work out all the mistakes first.
