Oh, you’re asking about the backyard project we finally started last weekend? Yeah, we decided to rip out that old raised bed that never drained right. The soil was basically mud every time it rained, and the tomatoes were just sad. We rebuilt it with cedar planks—cost a bit more but should last years without rotting. We also added a drip irrigation kit because I got tired of dragging the hose around. Took us a full Saturday and most of Sunday, but honestly it was worth it. My partner handled the leveling while I did the cutting and fastening. We grabbed some compost from the garden center and mixed it in with the existing soil. Going to plant peppers and basil next month. I still need to figure out the spacing for the peppers because the last batch was too crowded and they didn’t get enough air circulation. If you want tips on the irrigation setup, let me know and I can send you the exact parts we used.

Also, we finally tried that fermentation recipe you mentioned. The first batch of hot sauce is still bubbling away in the pantry. Smells really funky but supposedly that’s normal. We’re going to let it go another week before blending.

You mentioned you needed help picking a good hiking trail for this weekend. Have you looked at the Ridge Loop out near the state park entrance? It’s about six miles round trip with moderate elevation gain—nothing too steep but enough to get your heart rate up. The trailhead has decent parking if you arrive before 8 AM, and there’s a creek crossing about halfway that’s usually easy to step over unless we get rain the night before. We hiked it last month and saw a couple of deer and a lot of wildflowers. I’d recommend bringing poles if you have them because the descent can be a little loose on the gravel sections. Also, the forecast is calling for partly cloudy skies and highs around 72, which is pretty ideal. If you want a shorter option, the Pond Loop is only two miles and has some benches if you just want to take it easy. I’m planning to go Saturday morning if you want to join. Just bring plenty of water and a snack because there aren’t any facilities once you’re on the trail. Let me know what you decide.

Oh, and they just resurfaced the parking lot at the trailhead, so no more potholes to dodge. That alone makes the drive worth it.
