We decided to go with raised beds for the vegetable garden this year and so far the results have been great. The soil warms up faster in spring and drainage is much better than the native clay we were dealing with before. We built the frames from cedar which naturally resists rot and should last several seasons. The layout we used is four 4x8 beds with two foot pathways between them which makes it easy to reach everything without stepping into the beds. We filled them with a mix of compost peat moss and vermiculite. The tomatoes and peppers are doing especially well and we already harvested our first batch of lettuce. For next season we plan to add a drip irrigation system on a timer to make watering more consistent. The key is to keep up with the weeding early because once the plants fill in they shade out most of the weeds naturally.

We also added a small herb spiral near the kitchen door with rosemary thyme oregano and chives. It is convenient to step out and snip fresh herbs while cooking. The spiral design creates different microclimates so the herbs that like more sun go on the top and the ones that prefer partial shade settle near the bottom. So far everything has established well and we have not had any pest issues. A layer of mulch around the base helps retain moisture and keeps the soil temperature stable.

We just finished reading that book about the history of cartography and the discussion was really engaging. Everyone had different perspectives on how maps shape our understanding of place. The chapter about early nautical charts sparked the most conversation because of how inaccurate they were yet still used for navigation. We meet every other Thursday at the community center and usually have about twelve people attend. The format we use is each person brings one discussion question and we go around the table. It keeps the conversation balanced and ensures everyone participates. For the next meeting we are reading a book about urban planning and how cities develop over time. Several members have experience in architecture and planning so it should lead to some great insights.

I think the best part is how the group has evolved over the past year. We started with just four of us and now we have a waiting list. The facilitator rotates each month which keeps the reading selections varied. Last month we covered a biography and next month we are switching to a science themed pick. I can send you the reading list if you are interested in joining. The conversations have really helped me think more critically about what I read.
