i think the raised bed approach will work much better than planting directly in the ground given the soil condition near the fence. the cedar planks arrived yesterday and we picked up soil mix from the garden center. we are planning a 4x8 bed for vegetables and a smaller 3x3 for herbs. the tomatoes and peppers should get enough sun in that spot. i am looking at a drip irrigation kit that connects to the hose spigot with a timer which should make watering easier when we are away. still deciding between straw mulch or wood chips for weed control. landscape fabric underneath might be a good option regardless. let me know if you have thoughts on the layout before we start assembly this weekend.

we also need to figure out the best soil blend for the raised bed since the existing dirt is mostly clay. i read that mixing compost with topsoil and a bit of perlite gives good drainage. the garden center has a premix that might work. i will check the ingredients tomorrow.

saturday afternoon looks best for the cookout based on the weather forecast. we can start grilling around noon and plan to eat by 2. i am making barbecue chicken and trying a new smoked rib recipe. if you could bring your potato salad and a dessert that would be great. we have enough chairs and tables so seating is covered. the kids can play in the backyard while we are on the patio. we might set up a canopy as a backup in case of rain. i will send directions to everyone later this week. let me know if there is anything else you need for the gathering.

i also wanted to ask about drinks. should we pick up a couple of coolers and stock them with soda and water or does everyone typically bring their own. let me know what works best for your group so we have enough for everyone.
