Yeah, I finally got around to building that bookshelf I mentioned last month. The whole project took about six hours spread across Saturday and Sunday. I used oak plywood for the main structure and pine for the trim pieces. The joinery was pretty straightforward since I stuck with pocket holes instead of trying dovetails. I did run into an issue with the shelf pins though—I measured twice but still managed to drill one row slightly off. Had to fill and re-drill. Next time I'll use a template for sure. The finish came out nice after three coats of polyurethane with light sanding between each one. I also added some small LED strip lights under the top shelf which really makes the whole thing pop. Let me know if you want the cut list, I saved it in my notebook.

I also grabbed some new clamps from the hardware store for the glue-up. The old ones I had weren't applying even pressure so I upgraded to a set of parallel jaw clamps. Made a huge difference in keeping the panels flat. I think I'll tackle a nightstand next using the same joinery approach but maybe with some walnut for contrast.

So I tried making that sourdough starter from scratch and it is actually working out better than I expected. Day one was just flour and water mixed together in a mason jar. By day three I started seeing bubbles which was a good sign. I fed it twice a day after that, discarding half each time and adding fresh flour and water. The smell changed from kinda funky to more yeasty and pleasant. It doubled in size consistently by day seven so I attempted my first loaf. The crumb was a bit dense but it had good flavor and a decent crust. I think I need to work on my shaping technique and maybe let it proof a little longer. My kitchen counter is a bit cool so fermentation takes longer. I am going to try again this weekend with a slightly higher hydration dough to see if that helps the crumb open up more.

I also started a second batch using whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose to compare the flavor profiles. The whole wheat one seems to be moving a bit slower but smells much more complex. I think I will experiment with adding some rye flour later on.
