I think starting the compost pile with equal parts green and brown materials will give you the best results. The greens provide nitrogen and the browns provide carbon which both are needed for the microbes to break everything down efficiently. You want to layer them rather than mixing everything at once. Keep the pile about as moist as a wrung-out sponge and turn it every week or so. That should produce usable compost within a few months depending on your climate and what you put in there.
