I ended up using cedar for the birdhouse since it holds up well outdoors. The measurements I used were 6 inches for the base and about 10 inches for the overall height. You want the entrance hole to be 1.5 inches for most small birds. I predrilled all the holes before assembling to prevent the wood from splitting. The roof overhang needs to be at least 2 inches to keep rain out. I didn't use any paint or stain since birds prefer natural wood. For mounting, I attached it to a 6-foot post with some galvanized brackets. The cleanup took about 15 minutes after I finished. Let me know if you need the exact cutting list I worked from. I also added some drainage holes in the bottom and a small lip to keep the nesting material from falling out. The whole project took me about 4 hours including gathering the materials. I found that using a template made the cuts more consistent and saved time on measuring each piece individually.

The tools I needed were pretty basic a circular saw, a drill with a 1.5 inch spade bit, and some sandpaper. I clamped the pieces together before drilling to keep everything aligned. The cedar boards I got were already planed so I didn't need to do any additional surface prep. If you decide to build one let me know and I can share the diagram I sketched out.

I used a 2 to 1 ratio of flour to eggs for the pasta dough. Tipo 00 flour gives the best texture but all-purpose works fine too. You need to let the dough rest for at least 30 minutes before rolling it out. I find that dusting with semolina instead of flour prevents sticking better. The pasta sheets should be thin enough to see your hand through before cutting. For the sauce I used San Marzano tomatoes that I crushed by hand. I simmered it with garlic and basil for about 45 minutes. The key is to not overcook the pasta after it dries. Fresh pasta only needs 2 to 3 minutes in boiling water. I served it with some grated Parmesan and a drizzle of olive oil. Everyone at the table enjoyed it. Next time I might try adding a touch of nutmeg to the dough for extra warmth in the flavor profile.

I also reserved about a cup of the pasta water before draining to loosen the sauce if needed. The starch in the water helps the sauce cling to the noodles. I used a bench scraper to cut the fettuccine strips and hung them on a drying rack for about 20 minutes before boiling. You can freeze the extra portions on a baking sheet and then transfer them to a bag for later. Just drop them straight into boiling water without thawing.
