I think the best approach for the backyard renovation is to start with the patio first. We looked at several options and the stamped concrete gives the best look for the price. It can mimic the look of stone or brick without the cost. The contractor we spoke with said it would take about three days to complete including curing time. For the seating area we decided on a simple L-shape built-in bench along the fence. It will have storage underneath for cushions and tools. We're using cedar for the bench since it holds up well outdoors. The color will be a natural stain to match the house trim. For plants we're going with drought-tolerant options like lavender and ornamental grasses. They'll need minimal watering once established. The whole project should be done in about two weeks if the weather cooperates. Let me know if you want the contact info for the contractor we used.

We also picked out a nice fire pit for the center of the patio. It's a simple steel bowl design that can burn wood or propane. The goal is to have it all finished before the fall so we can enjoy the outdoor space while the weather is still nice.

The book club meeting went really well last night. We discussed the second half of the novel and everyone had strong opinions about the ending. Most of us agreed that the character development was the strongest part of the story. The author really took their time building the relationships. We had a good turnout with twelve people showing up. Sarah brought her famous chocolate chip cookies and Mark made a batch of his spiced cider. For next month we chose a non-fiction book about coastal ecosystems. It should be a nice change of pace from fiction. We decided to meet at the same place unless someone wants to host. I can send you the reading schedule if you want to join. The book is about two hundred fifty pages so it's manageable in a month. Let me know if you'd like a copy and I can pick one up from the library.

We also talked about maybe doing a weekend trip to the coast to see some of the tide pools mentioned in the book. It could be a nice way to combine the reading with a real-world experience.
