We had a good discussion about the community garden plot yesterday. I think we should go with the raised bed plan since the soil in that area has a lot of clay and doesn't drain well. I checked with the city office and they confirmed we can install up to six 4x8 beds without a permit. The lumber list came to about twelve 2x6 boards and some corner brackets. Everyone seemed comfortable splitting the work into two weekends. The first weekend we can build the frames and lay down landscape fabric. The second weekend we bring in the soil mix and start planting. I talked to the nursery about their bulk soil delivery and they said we need at least two cubic yards to fill all six beds properly. They recommended a mix of topsoil and compost with some perlite for drainage. A few people offered to bring seeds and seedlings. I think we should coordinate who brings what so we don't end up with too many of the same thing. Someone mentioned building a small shed for tools but that would need a permit so we might have to put that off for now. The city also has rules about pathways between beds needing to be at least three feet wide for accessibility so we should factor that into the layout. Overall it seems like a solid plan and everyone is excited to get started as soon as the weather cooperates.

I also reached out to the neighbor who lives next to the lot and she was very supportive. She offered to let us use her outdoor spigot for watering which is a huge help since there is no water hookup on the lot itself. She mentioned that the previous owner used to grow tomatoes there and the soil was good but neglected. We will still do a soil test kit first just to be safe. The hardware store has basic test kits for under twenty dollars. I can pick one up this weekend and run the test.

One more thing we need to decide is whether we want to do a sign-up sheet for weekly maintenance or keep it more informal. Some people prefer having a schedule and others want to just show up when they can. We can talk about it more at the next meeting.

I wanted to follow up on the hiking trip we were planning for next month. I checked the trail conditions at Bear Mountain and the ranger station reported that the upper loop is still a bit muddy from the recent rains but the lower trail is in good shape. We could do the lower loop which is about four miles with a nice waterfall about halfway. It is rated moderate so it should work for everyone in the group. I also looked into campsite availability and there are still a few spots at the Pine Ridge campground for the weekend we discussed. Each site has a fire ring and a picnic table. There is no potable water at the sites so we will need to bring our own or use the pump station near the ranger office. I reserved two adjacent sites under my name just in case. We can always cancel if the plans change. I also checked the weather history for that weekend in previous years and it tends to be mild with lows around fifty degrees at night. So we should all bring a warm sleeping bag or extra blanket. Someone asked about bringing dogs and the lower trail does allow leashed pets so that should be fine. I will send out a group message later this week to finalize who is coming and coordinate gear and food. Let me know if you have any questions about the route or the gear list.

Also I wanted to mention that the visitor center at the base has a small store with maps and snacks. They also rent bear canisters for a small deposit if anyone needs one. The drive up takes about two hours from town so we could plan to meet there around nine in the morning on Saturday. If we start hiking by nine thirty we will have plenty of time to finish before dark. The sunset that weekend is around seven fifteen so we will have a good window. I think it will be a great trip.
