I think the best way to handle the garden this year is to focus on perennials rather than annuals. We tried that approach last season with the lavender and rosemary and they came back even stronger this spring.

The soil needs to be amended with compost first though because the clay content is pretty high in that area. I would suggest tilling in about three inches of organic matter before planting.

For the layout we used a circular pattern with the tallest plants in the center and gradually shorter ones toward the edges. It creates a nice visual effect and makes it easier to reach everything for pruning and harvesting.

The drip irrigation system we installed was relatively simple to set up and has saved us a lot of time on watering. You just need a timer and some tubing with emitters spaced according to what you are growing.

I can send you the exact parts list if you decide to go that route. The local hardware store carries everything you need and the whole setup cost less than I expected.

The hiking trail we took last weekend was incredible and not too crowded. It is about six miles round trip with a moderate elevation gain of around 800 feet.

The trailhead is located just past the ranger station on the left side of the road. There is a small parking area that fits about fifteen cars so getting there early is recommended.

The path is well marked with blue blazes and there are several lookout points along the way. We packed sandwiches and ate lunch at the summit which had panoramic views of the valley below.

The terrain varies from rocky sections to smooth dirt paths so good hiking boots are helpful. We spotted a few deer and a variety of birds along the trail.

The whole hike took us about four hours including our lunch break. If you want to go I would suggest picking a weekday to avoid the weekend crowds.
