I think the best approach for seasoning cast iron is to start with a very thin layer of oil and bake it at a high temperature. You asked about the best method and I have found that using grapeseed oil works really well because it has a high smoke point. Apply a small amount and then wipe it off thoroughly, almost like you are trying to remove it. Then place it upside down in the oven at 450 degrees for an hour. Let it cool completely inside the oven. Repeat this process three or four times and you will have a nice initial seasoning. After that, just maintain it by cleaning with hot water and a stiff brush, drying it completely on the stove, and applying a light coat of oil while it is still warm. This method has worked really well for me over the years and my pans are very non-stick now. Let me know if you want to try this together sometime.

I also recommend using a paper towel to apply the oil rather than a cloth, because paper towels leave less lint behind. The first few rounds of seasoning might look a bit uneven but that is normal and will even out with use. One important thing is to make sure you are heating the pan slowly so it does not warp. I usually put the pan in the cold oven and then set the temperature rather than placing it in a preheated oven. That gradual heat helps the metal expand evenly.

You asked about good hiking trails in the area and I think the best option depends on what kind of experience you are looking for. If you want something moderate with good views, the ridge trail that starts near the old fire tower is excellent. It is about six miles round trip with a steady climb but not too steep. The trail is well maintained and there are several spots where you can stop and enjoy the scenery. If you prefer something shorter, the loop trail around the lake is only two miles and very easy. It is mostly flat and shaded, making it a good choice for a relaxed afternoon. I have hiked both trails recently and they are in good condition. The ridge trail does have some rocky sections so I would recommend wearing sturdy shoes. Let me know which one sounds more interesting and I can share more details about parking and the best time to go.

One thing I forgot to mention is that the ridge trail has a small stream crossing about halfway through. It is usually easy to step across on rocks but after heavy rain it might be a bit trickier so check the weather beforehand. There is also a nice picnic spot near the top with a bench overlooking the valley. I usually bring a sandwich and take a break there before heading back down. The trailhead parking lot fits about fifteen cars and tends to fill up by mid morning on weekends so arriving early is a good idea. If you decide to go on a weekday it will be much quieter and you will likely have the trail to yourself for most of the hike.
