Regarding the vegetable garden layout you asked about, I think raised beds would work better for your sloped area. The key is to orient them north-south so all plants get even sun exposure. For soil mix, I recommend two parts topsoil, one part compost, and one part perlite for good drainage. I use cedar boards for the frames because they last longer. If you want to start small, a single 4x8 bed can hold tomatoes, peppers, and basil with room for a few marigolds. Let me know if you need the list of suppliers I use for materials.

The route you mentioned for the weekend hike — I think starting from the lower trailhead is better this time of year because the upper parking lot tends to fill by 7 am. The loop is about 6 miles with moderate elevation gain, and there is a nice creek crossing around mile 2 where you can refill water if you bring a filter. I usually bring layered clothing since the temperature drops quickly after 3 pm. If you want company, I am free Saturday morning and could meet you at the trailhead around 6:30.
