You can propagate succulents from leaf cuttings pretty easily once you understand the basic steps. The key is letting the cut end callous over for a few days before placing it on soil. I usually set them on a tray with a well-draining cactus mix and mist them every few days. Roots typically appear within two to three weeks depending on the variety and temperature in the room. Bright indirect light works best during the rooting phase. Direct sun can dry out the leaves too quickly before they have roots to draw moisture. I have found that the softer varieties like graptopetalum do better with slightly more frequent misting while the firmer types like echeveria can go longer between waterings. If you see the bottom leaf starting to shrivel that is usually a sign it is working. Once the original leaf dries up and falls off you have a new independent plant. You can then pot it up into its own container. I usually wait until the roots are about half an inch long before moving them. The whole process takes patience but it is very rewarding when you see new growth starting.

For cast iron seasoning the most reliable method I have found uses flaxseed oil applied in very thin layers. You heat the pan to warm then wipe on a small amount of oil and buff it off until the surface looks dry. Place it upside down in an oven at 450 degrees for one hour. The key step is letting the pan cool slowly inside the oven after the hour is up. I usually just turn the oven off and leave it overnight. Three to four rounds of this process produce a dark even surface that holds up well to cooking. The first few times you cook with it stick to foods that are not too acidic and use a little extra oil at first. After several uses the seasoning builds up and becomes more durable. I have found that cornbread and fried potatoes are great first dishes for a newly seasoned pan. Avoid boiling water or simmering acidic sauces until the seasoning is well established. If you notice a patch starting to look dull you can do a quick single round of seasoning just on the stovetop using the same thin oil method.
