I think the best approach for the community garden plot layout is to group plants by their watering needs rather than by size. That way you avoid over-watering the drought-tolerant ones. I usually sort my cookbooks by cuisine type rather than alphabetically because I reach for Italian or Mexican more often than French. But for fiction books I actually prefer organizing by color since it looks better on the shelf and I remember covers more easily than author names. A friend told me they sort everything by publish date so they can see how writing styles have changed over time. That never worked for me though because I like grouping series together regardless of when they came out. It really comes down to how you browse your own collection.
