I've been looking into the community garden layout you asked about. The raised beds should face south to get maximum sunlight throughout the day. I measured the plot yesterday and we have about 40 feet by 60 feet to work with. If we put the taller plants like corn and sunflowers on the north side they won't shade the smaller vegetables. The soil test came back showing we need to add some compost and adjust the pH a bit. I was thinking we could set up a rotating schedule for watering since we'll need to do it daily during the hotter months. There's a hose bib on the east side of the lot that we can tap into. I also looked into getting some free wood chips from the city's tree trimming program to use for pathways between the beds. That would help with weed control and keep things looking neat. For the composting area I think a three-bin system would work best for us. We can start gathering materials now so it's ready by planting time. The garden committee meeting is next Tuesday evening if you want to come along and share your thoughts on the layout.

I finished reading that novel you recommended and I have to say the character development was really well done. The way the author wove together the different timelines made sense by the end though I was confused at first. I especially liked how the main character's perspective shifted after the key event in chapter twelve. For our next meeting I was thinking we could discuss the symbolism of the old house and what it represented for each character. I noticed several references to the garden that seemed important but I'm not sure if they were meant to be metaphors for something else. The book club meeting is this Saturday at my place I'll have some snacks and tea ready. Let me know if you want me to prepare some discussion questions ahead of time. I also found a podcast interview with the author that goes into her writing process which might give us some interesting background. We could listen to it before the discussion if everyone is interested. The weather should be nice so we can sit on the patio if you prefer being outside.
