I have been thinking about the backyard patio project for a while and I think I finally have a solid plan. We are going to use large concrete pavers in a staggered pattern to create a twelve by sixteen foot space off the back door. I already measured the area and marked the corners with stakes and string. The ground needs to be leveled first which means renting a plate compactor for a day. My brother said he can help with the heavy lifting on Saturday morning. We will need about three tons of gravel base and then a layer of sand before setting the pavers. I priced everything out at the local supply yard and it comes to around four hundred dollars for materials. That does not include the edging or the polymeric sand for the joints. I might add a small fire pit area in the center with a ring of smaller stones. I found a good tutorial online that shows how to cut pavers with a masonry blade so we can fit them around the edges. I also want to leave a gap on one side for a planter box. The whole thing should take two weekends if the weather cooperates. I am excited to finally have a proper place to sit outside and relax.

I also need to pick up some extra stakes and a longer level. The string line I have is only fifty feet so I might need a longer one to get the layout right. I will stop by the hardware store on Friday to grab those and also get some work gloves for everyone helping. I figure we can start early around seven in the morning before it gets too hot. I will make a big batch of iced tea and maybe grill some burgers for lunch. It should be a good day working together and getting something done.

We finally settled on a date for the neighborhood potluck and it will be on the first Sunday of next month at the community center. Everyone is bringing a dish to share and we have about twenty families signed up so far. I am planning to make a large batch of baked ziti with three cheeses and a side of garlic bread. My neighbor is bringing her famous coleslaw and another friend is bringing a fruit salad. We will have a mix of main dishes sides and desserts so there should be plenty for everyone. The community center has a big kitchen with ovens and a refrigerator so we can keep things warm or cold as needed. I reserved the room for the whole afternoon so we can set up early and clean up at our own pace. We will have tables arranged in a long row for the food and then smaller round tables for seating. I am also bringing some tablecloths and napkins just to make it look nice. The kids can play in the adjoining room which has toys and a television. I think this will be a great way for everyone to catch up and meet some of the newer families in the neighborhood. I have been looking forward to this for weeks.

I also need to confirm with the center about the number of chairs they have. I think they have enough but I want to be sure so we are not short on seating. I will call them on Tuesday to check. I also plan to bring a few extra folding chairs from home just in case. We will have a sign-up sheet for beverages so we do not end up with too much of one thing. I am bringing lemonade and iced water. It will be a relaxed afternoon with good food and good company.
