Hi Jamie, thanks for the note. We ended up taking the northern trail instead of the usual loop. It was about 8 miles round trip. The weather was perfect, not too hot. We stopped at the old fire lookout for lunch. The views were incredible. On the way back, we saw a family of deer. It took us about 5 hours with breaks. I would definitely recommend bringing extra water. The stream we expected to cross was completely dry. It made the last mile a bit tough. Let me know if you want to borrow the trail map. We parked at the main lot and it was nearly full at 8 AM. Getting an earlier start is definitely the way to go. I think you and your brother would really like this trail. It has a good mix of shade and open meadows. The wildflowers are starting to bloom at the lower elevations. I'll send you the GPS coordinates of the lookout. It's a great spot for photos. Anyway, let me know what you think. We are planning another trip next month if you want to join.

I finally tried making that sourdough starter from scratch. It took about 10 days to get it really active. The first loaf was a bit dense, but the second one had a really nice oven spring. I used a mix of bread flour and whole wheat. The key is to feed it regularly and keep it in a warm spot. My kitchen is usually around 70 degrees, which worked well. I baked it in a Dutch oven and got a fantastic crust. The inside was chewy with good air pockets. My neighbor gave me some tips on scoring. It makes such a difference in how it expands. I also tried a no-knead recipe that was very forgiving. It uses a lot less flour for the dusting. I'm still experimenting. Next time I want to add some herbs or olives. Maybe some sun-dried tomatoes. The process is very relaxing, honestly. It's a good counterbalance to sitting at a desk all day. You should definitely give it a shot. The ingredients are just flour and water. Let me know if you want a copy of the feeding schedule I used.
