Yeah, I finally finished sanding down that old oak desk I picked up from the estate sale last month. It took way longer than I expected because the previous owner had painted it with this thick industrial varnish that gummed up all my sandpaper. I stripped it chemically first but honestly the smell was brutal so I switched back to mechanical sanding with a respirator. The grain underneath is absolutely stunning though — deep medullary rays that just glow once you hit them with some Danish oil. I'm thinking about replacing the hardware with some brushed brass pulls I saw online. Still debating whether to add a shelf underneath for the keyboard tray or just keep it minimal. What do you think?

The best part was finding a handwritten note from 1972 tucked inside one of the drawers with a grocery list and a little sketch of a cat. Made all the elbow grease worth it. I'll send you a photo once I get the first coat of finish on it.

I set up that small hydroponic tower in the kitchen last week and everything is actually sprouting. I was really worried about the nutrient balance because the tap water here is pretty hard but the pH buffer seems to be handling it. Got some basil, cilantro, and a tiny chili pepper plant that are all showing true leaves now. The basil definitely grows faster than anything else. I need to rig a better light setup because the shelf blocks some of the afternoon sun. Might just grab one of those cheap LED grow panels from the hardware store. Have you tried growing any herbs indoors during the winter? I'd love tips if you have any.

I also started experimenting with a small Kratky jar for some lettuce and it's almost zero maintenance. Just set it and forget it. The roots are already reaching down into the nutrient solution. Very satisfying to watch.
