I finally got around to organizing my bookshelf this weekend and it feels so good to have everything sorted by genre again. I found a couple of books I borrowed from a friend years ago that I completely forgot about. I need to return those as soon as possible. The whole process took longer than I expected because I kept stopping to flip through old favorites. I re-read the first chapter of one that I loved in college and it still holds up really well. My cat also decided to help by sitting in the empty spots on the shelf while I was working. She seemed to think she was being very useful. I ended up with a pile of about fifteen books that I want to re-read now. My reading list keeps growing faster than I can keep up with it. I need to find more hours in the day for reading. Has that ever happened to you where you just keep discovering more books you want to read? It is a nice problem to have I suppose.

I also started a new series a friend recommended and I am already hooked after two episodes. The characters are really well written and the cinematography is stunning. I love when a show pulls you in from the very first scene. This one has a slow burn mystery at the center and I am trying to piece together clues before the big reveal. My partner keeps asking me to wait so we can watch together but it is so hard not to binge ahead. We compromise by watching one episode each evening and then discussing our theories afterward. It has become a nice little routine for us.

I tried making sourdough bread from scratch for the first time and it did not go as planned. The starter took nearly two weeks to become active and then the dough was way too sticky to shape properly. I ended up with something that looked more like a flat pancake than a rustic loaf. The taste was actually not bad though. It had a nice tangy flavor even if the texture was dense. I think I added too much water at the beginning. My friend who bakes all the time said it takes several tries before you get a feel for the dough consistency. She recommended watching a few video tutorials to see how the dough should look and feel. I am going to try again this weekend with less water and see if I get better results. The whole process is very relaxing though. There is something satisfying about working with dough and waiting for it to rise. Even a failed loaf fills the house with a wonderful smell while it bakes.

I also picked up a new hobby of sketching with charcoal pencils. I found an old sketchbook in a drawer and decided to give it a try. My first few drawings were pretty rough but I can already see improvement after a week of practice. I focus on simple still life objects like fruit and coffee mugs. There is something meditative about focusing on shadows and light. I might sign up for a local workshop if I keep enjoying it.
