I think the composite decking idea is a solid choice for your patio. It really does hold up better in humid weather and the maintenance is almost nothing. We put in a grey-toned board last year and it barely shows dirt. Just make sure your substructure is level and well-drained. You might want to run the plan past your HOA first. Ours had a rule about color matching the neighborhood. The installation took us about a weekend with basic tools. You can borrow our saw if needed.
